The mission of the Regional Health Occupations Resource Center is to advance Los Angeles County's growth through education, training, and services that contribute to continuous workforce development; bridging the gap between Health Care Education and the Health Care Industry.

You Can Do It!

All statewide RHORCs are actively helping with the coordination of new and expanded nursing programs. The following activities of the Los Angeles County RHORC (LA RHORC) are representative of the many creative programs being developed to reduce California's Nursing shortage.

The LA RHORC helped increase the capacity in L.A. County Community Colleges' ADN programs. Through a two-year IDRC Grant written and coordinated by the RHORC, Los Angeles City College (LACC) opened a new ADN program that has received BRN accreditation. LACC admitted the first class of 36 students in the fall of 2002. Matching funds from Kaiser Permanente Queen of Angels - Hollywood Presbyterian Hospital and Childrens Hospital Los Angels, supported this project.

Another IDRC Grant was written and coordinated by the LA RHORC for Glendale Community College. A program has been implemented with four LA Community Colleges and California State University, Los Angeles (CSULA) to create a seamless ADN-BSN program. Glendale, Rio Hondo, Los Angeles Trade Tech and Mt. San Antonio College have expanded their first year nursing programs by twelve students each. At the end of the first year, these students will transition to CSULA as Juniors in the BSN program and in three years they will graduate with their BSN degrees.

These two projects will increase the number of nursing program graduates in LA County by up to 84 nurses per year. Additionally, the RHORC has written a HRSA Grant requesting funding for a partnership with Citrus Valley Health Partners. An additional 24 students will graduate from ADN programs on a yearly basis if this grant is also approved.

RHORC LA is partnering with the Welcome Back program to implement a NCLEX preparation program for Board Eligible Nurses. These are nurses who have taken the NCLEX State Board Exam and failed. The first class has completed the State Board Exam and 14 out of 15 nurses passed the Board.

Did you know.....FACT: California ranks rock bottom nationally in its share of Registered Nurses, with a ratio of only 544 R.N.'s for every 100.000 residents. Some experts are predicting the state will be short by as many as 25.000 nurses by 2006, potentially creating a public health crisis for California's growing and aging population.

FACT: Many foreign and American trained nursing graduates are working outside of the profession only because they have not passed the state board exam.

Where do you see yourself in the future?Your future might seem like a big, fuzzy grey void sometimes. But take a deep breath and relax…we've broken it down for you. The first step is to "explore it." Start by thinking about where you might want to be a year or two from now. What if you could make good money and do work that really makes a difference?

Your Pathway to Success... Mt.SAC's Regional Health Occupations Resource Center is now offering a review program that can actually help Registered Nurse candidates to pass California's R.N. licensing exam.Through RHORC's Licensed Nursing Pathway Project, nursing graduates get a thorough review of the National Clearinghouse Licensing Examination(NCLEX) as well as a review of essential nursing skills, test-taking techniques and medical terminology.

Regional Health Occupation Resource Center The L.A. County RHORC has made it a priority to address the nursing shortage. Leveraging resources with industry through contract education has made it possible to expand the current nursing programs in several regional colleges. Identifying board eligible nurses that have not been successful in passing the boards, and those that need one course to be board eligible, and providing them with the Nurse Licensure Pathway is also a focus. Together these efforts will result in more than 400 additional nurses by the year 2006.

Support Resources... If you require special support services to promote your succes, we are here to help. All candidates have access to Mt.SAC's Health Careers Resource Center and the RHORC Resource Center, as well as the College's Languange Lab to improve your languange skills.
